Treasures From the Hispanic Society Library
Drawing on the unparalleled collections in the Hispanic Society, this exhibition of more than one hundred manuscripts and books will present an exceptional vision of the history and culture of Spain and the Americas. Many items will be new the public since much of this material has never been shown outside of the Hispanic Society. New York has not seen a major exhibition of Spanish manuscript and printed material since Tesoros de España, an exhibition held at the New York Public Library in 1985.

Hispanic Society Museum & Library Announces the Curatorial and Conversation Research Fellows Program & Appointments
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library (HSM&L) – the primary institution dedicated to the preservation, study, understanding, exhibition and enjoyment of art and cultures of Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries and communities – is pleased to announce the appointment of four Curatorial and Conservation Research Fellows, supported, in part, by the Culpeper Program of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, with additional support from Queen Sofía Spanish Institute and Hubert and Mireille Goldschmidt.

Nuestra Casa Rediscovering the Treasures of The Hispanic Society Museum & Library
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library (HSM&L) is pleased to present Nuestra Casa: Rediscovering the Treasures of The Hispanic Society Museum & Library, revealing hidden gems from the expansive, permanent collection of the museum that includes more than 750,000 objects. Curated by Dr. Madeleine Haddon, the exhibition will open to the public on February 17, 2022, and run through April 17, 2022.

Fall 2023 Exhibitions
The primary institution dedicated to the preservation, study, understanding, exhibition and enjoyment of art and cultures of Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries and communities – announces its line-up of Fall exhibitions for 2023. On the heels of the reopening of its Main Building earlier this year, the HSM&L is will open three new exhibitions this season.

American Travelers: A Watercolor Journey Through Spain, Portugal, and Mexico
The show focuses on major watercolors by American artists that were painted in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, in dialogue with decorative art objects from the HSM&L collections from the actual places and monument depicted in the watercolors. The show will include a suite of contemporary watercolor paintings by California-based artist Timothy J. Clark (b. 1951), best known for his large watercolor paintings.

The Hispanic Society Museum & Library Announces New Trustees Yvette Ostolaza, James Blanco & Regina Weingarten
In addition to the new trustees, the Hispanic Society is thrilled to welcome several new members of the International Advisory Committee (IAC). The IAC, established by Board Chairman Emeritus Philippe de Montebello, convenes outstanding individuals from around the world who have distinguished themselves through their passion for Hispanic and Latino art and culture.

Hispanic Society Museum & Library Announces Mark H. Rosenberg as Chairman
HSM&L is pleased to announce Mark H. Rosenberg as its new Chairman. Rosenberg succeeds Philippe de Montebello, who significantly raised the museum’s profile for nearly a decade. Philippe de Montebello will remain with HSM&L as Chairman Emeritus, working closely in collaboration with Rosenberg and the team at the HSM&L. In addition, Sergio J. Galvis and Maria Cortez de Lobão are elected Co-Vice-Chairs of the HSM&L.

The Hispanic Society Museum & Library presents Adriana Varejão: Don’t Forget, We Come From the Tropics
HSM&L is pleased to present Adriana Varejão: Don’t Forget, We Come From the Tropics, an exhibition of new paintings and sculpture by leading Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão. Marking the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in New York and her third in the United States, the show features new paintings from Varejão’s acclaimed Plate series and a site-specific outdoor sculptural intervention.

The Hispanic Society Museum & Library Presents The Colorful World of Pancho Fierro, Afro-Peruvian Painter
The Colorful World of Pancho Fierro, Afro-Peruvian Painter, a captivating showcase of the vibrant watercolors of Francisco “Pancho” Fierro Palas (1807/9 – 1879)curated by Dr. Marcus Burke, Senior Curator Emeritus at the Hispanic Society. On view January 23, 2025 – April 20, 2025, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the life and artistry of one of Peru’s most fascinating visual chroniclers.

The Hispanic Society Museum & Library presents “Out of the Closets! Into the Streets!” New York City’s Pride March 1975-1976
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library is pleased to announce “Out of the Closets! Into the Streets!”, an exhibition showcasing 18 photographs of New York City’s early Pride Marches from 1975 and 1976. Captured on vivid Kodachrome film, these historic images represent some of the earliest photographic works by Francisco Alvarado-Juárez—an internationally acclaimed multimedia artist born in Honduras and based in New York City.

Hispanic Society Museum & Library Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, and Boricua College Present Latinx Diaspora: Stories from Upper Manhattan & in the Heights: From University to Silver Screen
We are pleased to announce the launch of an exciting collaboration between the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA), and Boricua College on three exciting exhibitions: Latinx Diaspora: Stories from Upper Manhattan, which open on Audubon Terrace on May 28, 2021; In the Heights: The Magic of a Neighborhood, scheduled to open on June 3, 2021 at Boricua College; and In the Heights: From University to Silver Screen on June 9, 2021 at the Hispanic Society. These exhibitions inaugurate the annual Arts Stroll/Paseo de las Artes organized by NoMAA.

Hispanic Society Names Guillaume Kientz Director
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library announced today that its Board of Trustees has elected Guillaume Kientz to be the institution’s next Director and CEO. Mr. Kientz’s appointment takes effect early in 2021; an exact date is yet to be determined.

Gilded Figures: Wood and Clay Made Flesh
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library (HSM&L) is pleased to present Gilded Figures: Wood and Clay Made Flesh, offering a rare glimpse of a major art form from the Hispanic World 1500–1800: polychrome sculpture. Curated by Dr. Patrick Lenaghan, Head Curator of prints, photographs and sculpture of the HSM&L, and Hélène Fontoira-Marzin, Head of Conservation of the HSM&L, the exhibition will open to the public on October 15, 2021, and run through January 9, 2022.

Hispanic Society Museum & Library Presents Treasures on the Terrace: Highlights from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library is pleased to present the outdoor installation, Treasures on the Terrace: Highlights from the Hispanic Society Museum& Library. Drawing on the museum’s world-renowned collection, large-scale photographic reproductions feature 19 works from Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Peru. dating from the 16th through the 20th centuries. Mounted at the entrance on Audubon Terrace, the installation runs from September 24 to December 6, 2020.

Hispanic Society Museum & Library Executive Director and President, Dr. Mitchell A. Codding, Announces Retirement
Dr. Mitchell A. Codding, the Executive Director and President of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library since 1995 and its Assistant Director from 1984 to 1995, announced his retirement today to take effect on October 1, 2020, or until his successor assumes the position of Director. The Board of the institution is grateful to Dr. Codding for agreeing to lead the institution until then.

The Winter Show Announces the 2020 Loan Exhibition Unrivaled Hispanic Society Museum & Library
The Winter Show is pleased to announce its 2020 loan exhibition featuring masterworks from the renowned collection of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, spanning 4,000 years of Hispanic history, art, and culture. On view January 24–February 2, 2020, the exhibition is co-curated by esteemed art historian and curator Philippe de Montebello, Chairman of the Board of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, and acclaimed architect Peter Marino.

2017 Gala
On Thursday, October 12, 2017, The Hispanic Society Museum & Library will hold its annual Gala at the historic Metropolitan Club in New York City.

Award Presentation to the Hispanic Society in Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the New York City Council and the Manhattan Borough President’s Office will present a $1,750,000 award to the Hispanic Society to support the third phase of their Master Plan. The award presentation will be followed by a Gallery Talk about the Puerto Rican artist, José Campeche, and a tour of the Museum.

Family Night at The Hispanic Society Celebrates the Restoration of Bronze Doors by Berthold Nebel
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library, the premier collection for the study and appreciation of the Hispanic arts and culture in the United States, will present a Family Night to celebrate the recent restoration of the bronze doors of its East Building by the American sculptor Berthold Nebel (1889-1964). The Family Night will take place on Wednesday, June 21 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Audubon Terrace, in front of the East Building of the Hispanic Society.

Hélène Fontoira Marzin Named Head of Conservation of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library
he Hispanic Society Museum & Library announces the appointment of Hélène Fontoira Marzin as Head of Conservation. Ms. Fontoira has been working at the Hispanic Society as a conservator of paintings and sculpture for seventeen years. With this appointment, the Hispanic Society continues its commitment to the conservation of its collection. Drawing on Ms. Fontoira’s expertise, the museum will stay abreast of the latest developments in conservation. As the museum increases its outreach, its works are reaching an ever greater public. Ms. Fontoira’s appointment is part of a broader directive to ensure that this is achieved with the greatest success while always maintaining a high level of care for the pieces.

Hispanic Society Museum & Library Elects Four New Trustees
Chairman Philippe de Montebello announces the election of Bob Vila, Emily Kernan Rafferty, Jonathan Hogg, and Elizabeth Goizueta to the Board of Trustees of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library. The four new trustees join Board members Philippe de Montebello, Mariette Arguimbau Scott, William R. Harman, Francisco A. Lorenzo, Miner H. Warner. Andrés V. Gil, Antonio del Valle Ruiz, Ana Laffont, and Mark H. Rosenberg.

Hispanic Society Museum & Library Selects Selldorf Architects, Beyer, Blinder Belle, and Reed Hilderbrand to Lead Their Strategic Architectural Plans
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library announces the architects selected to develop a detailed architectural plan that will help shape the future of the institution. The team selected to lead the project are Selldorf Architects as design architects, Beyer Blinder Belle Architects, as executive architects, and Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architecture, as landscape architects.

Philippe de Montebello Elected Chairman of the Hispanic Society’s Board of Trustees
The Hispanic Society of America announced today the election of Philippe de Montebello as Chairman of the Board, following the retirement of George B. Moore who had served as a Trustee since 1995 and as Chairman since 2004. Mr. de Montebello officially assumed the chairmanship at the Society’s Annual Meeting held on April 1, 2015. Mr. Francisco A. Lorenzo, who has served as a Trustee since 2005, was elected Vice Chairman at the Annual Meeting.

Th Hispanic Society Museum & Library Receives an Important Colonial Latin American Gift from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library is delighted to announce the donation from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros of a striking 18th century Venezuelan gilded armchair made by Antonio Mateo de los Reyes (active from 1725 to 1766) for the Brotherhood of Saint Peter for the nave of the Cathedral of Caracas. This gift, made in honor of Laure de Montebello, is part of a donation to five institutions that will receive works of colonial art from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC), including the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas; Denver Art Museum, Colorado; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI), Peru.

The Hispanic Society Museum & Library Launches 2017-2018 Concert Series with Hispanic Woman Composers
The Hispanic Society proudly announces its 2017-2018 Concert Series “Hispanic Women Composers.” Acclaimed chamber ensemble Sonnambula will perform the first concert in the series. The concert will feature the complete works of Portuguese Converso Jewish composer, Leonora Duarte, in anticipation of Sonnambula’s recording of the same repertoire. Musicologist Elizabeth Weinfield, artistic director of Sonnambula, will present a lecture on Duarte prior to concert.

The Hispanic Society of America Begins its 2015-2016 Concert Series
The music series at The Hispanic Society of America announces its 2015-2016 concert series “From Barcelona with Passion: Enrique Granados in New York”. The first concert in the series focuses on the voice and dance works of the celebrated late 19th-century Catalan composer. Vocal and Dance Music by Enrique Granados will feature special invited artists from Spain, and will take place at the Hispanic Society of America, located at Broadway and West 155th Street in Manhattan.

The Hispanic Society Wins the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation
We are delighted to announce that The Hispanic Society of America was named the recipient of the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation from a field of nineteen candidates. The prestigious award was established in Spain by the Prince of Asturias Foundation in 1981 to acknowledge individuals, entities, and organizations worldwide who have made significant contributions and helped to promote cultural and humanistic values that form part of the universal heritage of humanity and consolidate the existing links between the principality of Asturias and the title traditionally held by the heirs to the Crown of Spain.

Two New Board Members Appointed to The Hispanic Society Museum & Library
Chairman Philippe de Montebello announces the election of Andrés A. Gil and Antonio del Valle Ruíz to the Board of Trustees of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library. The two new trustees represent the first expansion in numbers of the Board of Trustees since 1904 and they will join Board members Mariette Arguimbau Scott, William R. Harman, Francisco Lorenzo, and Miner H. Warner. “It is my pleasure to welcome these enthusiastic and deeply committed members to our Board,” commented Mr. de Montebello.
