Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. We have planned a series of exciting events and activities to celebrate this month.

Special Hispanic Heritage Month Tertulia: Treasures on the Terrace with Philippe de Montebello and Patrick Lenaghan
Philippe de Montebello, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, will host a conversation via YouTube Live with Dr. Patrick Lenaghan, Head of the Department of Prints and Photographs, to explore our new outdoor installation, “Treasures on the Terrace: Highlights from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library.” This special Tertulia (usually available to members) is open to all in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
The installation opens on September 24 and features works (in high quality reproduction) from the Hispanic Society collection in a safe outdoor environment at a moment when we are not able to fully enjoy indoor public activities. To complement the installation, there will be an audio component with interesting stories and information about the works.

Opening of Treasures on the Terrace: Highlights from The Hispanic Society Museum & Library
This outdoor installation presents photographic reproductions of works from Hispanic Society’s unparalleled collections. Located on Audubon Terrace, the exhibition features 17 images including works from Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico, dating from the 16th through the early 20th centuries.

Art Making workshop for kids
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library invites youth of all ages and ethnicities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through a print-making activity related to Hispanic artwork. Follow the step-by-step instructions in our how-to video to create your very own print of something that inspires you!
October 14, 2020 at 5:00pm – Live YouTube Music Event
Conversation and music performance celebrating Hispanic Women Composers
Dr. Elizabeth Weinfield will highlight works by women composers with cultural roots in the Iberian peninsula, focusing on Leonora Duarte (1610–1678), a Portuguese-Jewish converso living and working in Antwerp, and the only known woman to write for the viola da gamba in the 17th century.

Cocina Hispana: Rice Dishes from the Hispanic Society ‘s Collection of Cookbooks with Philippe de Montebello and Professor Mark Aldrich, Dickinson College
Philippe de Montebello will be joined Mark Aldrich, Associate Professor of Spanish and Executive Director of the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues at Dickinson College. Professor Aldrich is an avid paella enthusiast, and he will demonstrate how to cook a variation of the popular Valencian dish in a video tutorial, which will be followed by a live YouTube conversation about the process, the history of the dish, and the many variations it takes around the Hispanic world.
Professor Aldrich is particularly interested in 20th century Spanish poetry, although his publications include both Peninsular and Spanish American subjects. He has also published literary translations. His current scholarship is focused on poetry translation and the work of Rafael Pérez Estrada.

Hispanic Heritage Month Presentation – Virtual Talk for School Groups and Organizations
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library offers virtual presentations that showcase Hispanic artworks from the museum’s collection. The presentations will be led by museum educators, in which a variety of art objects will be examined and discussed, including items from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. The content can be adapted based on your organization’s needs or age groups. Presentations last approximately 45 minutes and are free of charge.

Maps from The Hispanic Society Museum & Library – Virtual Event for School Groups
The Maps program centers on early history of the Americas using the museum’s maps and globes collection in four lessons. In these, students gain practical knowledge of how to read a map and use coordinates, learn about the history of Hispanic culture in the Caribbean, and learn about the Maya, Aztec, and Incan civilizations. The program is designed for grades 6-9 and can be taught in English or in Spanish trough virtual format.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH BOOK CLUB
The Hispanic Society has created a Reading List in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The list reflects a careful selection made by our Assistant Librarian, William Delgado, of prominent 20th century writers from Spain and Latin America whose literary works are found in the Hispanic Society’s Library. All of the authors were elected members of the Society.
- El laberinto de la soledad y otras obras – Octavio Paz (1914-1998). Mexican poet. Winner of the Nobel Prize in 1990
- Collected fictions – Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986). Argentine
- Platero y yo – Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881–1958). Spanish poet. Winner of the Nobel Prize in 1956
- Desolación- Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957). Chilean poetess. Winner of the Nobel Prize in 1945
- La Familia de Pascual Duarte – Camilo José Cela (1916 –2002). Spanish novelist. Winner of the Nobel Prize in 1989
- La fiesta del chivo – Mario Vargas Llosa (1936- ). Distinguished Peruvian writer of international renown. Winner of the Nobel Prize in 2010
