This fall, the Hispanic Society will present a major exhibition exploring the history and significance of the mantilla in Spanish culture. The mantilla, a lace veil traditionally worn with a comb called a peineta, is the most distinctive garment in Spanish women’s fashion with origins dating to the 16th century. Featuring paintings, textiles, photographs, books, and works of contemporary fashion, the exhibition traces the remarkable evolution of the mantilla from a symbol of tradition and femininity into a powerful expression of identity and artistic innovation. Mantilla: Fashion Unveiled is the second installment in the Hispanic Society’s multi-year fashion initiative, following Spanish Style: Fashion Illuminated, 1550–1700. Stay tuned for more information about events and programs related to this exhibition.
