A World-Renowned Collection

The Museum Department of the Hispanic Society contains more than 18,000 works in almost every medium, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, decorative arts, and photographs dating from the Paleolithic to the 20th century. Objects from prehistoric, ancient, and medieval Iberia; early modern Spain and Portugal; Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Latin America; Portuguese Goa India; and the Philippines all figure notably in the collection.

The core of the collection was acquired by Hispanic Society founder Archer M. Huntington during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Important additions were made through donations and acquisitions, including the establishment of one of the most significant collections of Viceregal Latin American art in the United States.

As we are continuing to renovate our historic buildings on Audubon Terrace to provide more gallery space, parts of the permanent collection may not be on display. Please visit our Special Exhibitions page to see what works will be on view during your visit.
