Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. We have planned a series of exciting events and activities to celebrate this month.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS


September 7th, 2023 at 6:00pm (Performance) and 7:00pm (Film Screening) – Audubon Terrace |Broadway Between 155th & 156th Streets

Outdoor Film Series: IAW Filmworks Al Fresco at the Hispanic Society Presents “Ferdinand”
Preceding the film will be a  pre-show performance and class by Xianix Barrara Flamenco.

Join us for an outdoor movie night to watch “Ferdinand”, a bull with a big heart, who is mistaken for a dangerous beast, and captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team on the ultimate adventure. The film will have Spanish audio with English subtitles.

Hispanic Heritage Month Kick- off  Party by with Mano a Mano.

Join us for the start of Hispanic Heritage Month with an afternoon full of live music and artmaking presented by Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders.

Outdoor Film Series; IAW Filmworks Al Fresco at the Hispanic Society Presents Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios
Preceding the film will be a pre-show performance and class by Rumbamena Dance Company  

Join us for an outdoor movie night to watch “Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios”, the story of a television actress who encounters a variety of eccentric characters after embarking on a journey to discover why her lover abruptly left her. The film will have Spanish audio with English subtitles. Some content may not be appropriate for younger audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.

Outdoor Film Series: IAW Filmworks Al Fresco at the Hispanic Society Presents “Coco”
Preceding the film will be pare-show performance by Frida’s Revenge 

Join us for the last of the outdoor movie night series to watch “Coco.” Aspiring musician, Miguel, confronted with his family’s ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great grandfather, a legendary singer. The film will have Spanish audio with English subtitles.

Community Mural Workshop with Aurelio del Muro 

Please join us in a community mural workshop with local muralist, Aurelio del Muro. Feel free to come to all three sessions or stop by for one. All levels of creative experience are invited to participate. Open to all ages.

October 19th, 2023 at 6pm– Main Gallery | Broadway Between 155th & 156th Streets 

Uptown Artists Panel 

In honor of our exhibition on the works of the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco, the Hispanic Society will host a discussion panel of local uptown artists Andrea Arroyo, Danny Bonilla, Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez. They will discuss their approach to public art, along with its social and political implications.

Dia de Los Muertos Event with Mano a Mano 

Learn about the Dia de Los Muertos and spend an afternoon full of live music and artmaking presented by Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders. Participate in the activity station to create marigold paper flowers, decorate your Day of the Dead button, color and cut mini altars, and make papel picado. Part of the Open House New York Weekend.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH BOOK CLUB


The Hispanic Society has created a Reading List in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The list reflects a careful selection made by our Assistant Librarian, William Delgado, of prominent 20th century writers from Spain and Latin America whose literary works are found in the Hispanic Society’s Library. All of the authors were elected members of the Society. Happy reading!

  • Leonora. Elena Poniatowska(1932-). One of the most notable Mexican writers at the moment. Leonora is a novel based on the life of English surrealist painter Leonora Carrington, who lived in Mexico for most of her adult life
  • Shameful revenge. Maria de Zayas (1590-1650). Writer of the Spanish Golden Age whose work is considered to be of a great literary value. She is also seen as a forerunner of feminism. This is one of her short stories collections
  • Cantos de vida y esperanza, Rubén Darío(1867 –1916). Nicaraguan poet. One of the most important of the Spanish language. Member of the Hispanic Society. Passionate and powerful, a master in full possession of the secrets of his art
  • La serpiente sin ojos. William Ospina (1954-). One of the most original Colombian writers of the newer generations. He has a very poetic style and writes historical novels like this one about the Spanish conquest of America
  • Antología poética. Juana de Ibarborou(1892 – 1979). Uruguayan poetess. Member of the Hispanic Society. Very famous in her time. Characterized for the amazing freshness of her style
  • Savage comedies. Ramón María del Valle Inclán (1866-1936). Spanish writer. Original, iconoclastic, irreverent. Here is a collection of some of his most representative theatrical pieces in a new English translation
  • Peruvian Traditions. Ricardo Palma (1833 – 1919). Peruvian writer. Member of the Hispanic Society. Famous for his Tradiciones peruanas, a series of pleasant narratives drawn from the legends and history of his country
  • On love. José Ortega y Gasset (1883– 1955). Prominent Spanish philosopher. Member of the Hispanic Society. In this collection of essays he addresses with the flair that is so proper to him the ever inexhaustible topic of love
  • Pedro Páramo. Juan Rulfo (1917-1986).. Mexican writer .One of the most important figures of the Latin American Boom. Pedro Páramo is an hallucinating brief novel where the living mingle with the dead
  • Yo confieso. Jaume Cabré (1947-) One of the most important Spanish writers active at the moment. Member of the Hispanic Society. Yo confieso is a disturbing reflection on evil. It has been one of the greatest publishing events in Spain in recent years
